STH Westco welcomes a new ASM to the team. Simon Coates will cover the northeast region and key accounts in Scotland. We asked him a few questions to help us all get to know each other a little better.
Welcome to the team Simon, can you tell us a little bit about what your new role involves?
Thanks. Glad to be on board! I’m going to be responsible for growing business with current and new customers. This means building relationships and making sure everyone knows about how great the STH Westco portfolio of products is.
Sounds great. Have you been working in the plumbing and heating sector for a while?
I should say so. I started working in the industry when I was 18 at a plumber’s merchant. Since then I’ve worked for various manufacturers including a 10-year spell with the Vaillant group.
That’s an impressive career history Simon. With so much industry experience, you will have heard about STH Westco and what we do?
Absolutely. Westco is a company I have known for a lot of years and Glynn, National Sales Manager and the rest of the team sold me on joining. They were keen to convey that it’s a very close team which has a good market approach.
Nice to hear that the culture at STH Westco is part of what attracted you to the role. What will be your main areas of focus over the next 12 months?
Obviously, being new to the company I need to find my feet. But I will be focusing on current and particularly new accounts where there is scope for growth.
We are sure you’re going to do a great job. One thing we are particularly passionate about here at STH Westco, is keeping up to date with developments in the sector. We believe this helps us to serve our customers better. How do you manage this on top of a busy workload?
I find listening to customers is crucial. You can’t pretend to know what’s going on unless you have these two-way relationships. I also keep up to date with what’s going on in the industry through talking to my peers, social media platforms and the trade press.
What advice could you give to anyone thinking of starting out in the sector?
The best bit of advice I could give anybody joining the industry would be to work hard, be honest and always be yourself. Deliver what you promise and always have a smile on your face.
Great advice. Right, to get to know you a little better, can you tell us some interesting facts about yourself?
I was a member of the Middlesbrough football club academy at 14, I also had trials with Newcastle United.
And, believe it or not, I was once attacked by a peacock while doing a heating calculator at a client’s house! The incident caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage to my car.
I also swallowed a whistle when I was a child which resulted in me almost choking me to death. I ended up on the operating table to have it removed.
An almost pro-footballer, with a near-death experience, with a peacock as his nemesis. Welcome to STH Westco Simon!
